Climate action, the way forward

Building a societal consensus for 1.5°C

How it will work?

Participants will work in groups of 8-9 people, led by a facilitator, and independently documented by an observer.

To include most of Switzerland without translation, this edition will be in English: deliberations, proposal writing, and preparatory readings.

Driving questions:

  1. How to reduce Swiss territorial GHG emissions from 2022 to 2030 by at least 47%?

This aligns Swiss emissions with the EU target and corresponds to the stated reduction of 55% from 1990.

  2. Which climate actions could be understood and supported by a large majority >75%?

  3. How to unblock societal dialogue after 51.6% of Swiss voters rejected the 2021 CO2 Act?

Four key processes of the societal transition will be covered:

  • Supporting rapid innovation and its adoption

  • Redefining central institutions

  • Restricting incumbents from blocking the transition

  • Engaging the whole society

Groups will then vote on recommended actions, and results from all groups will be combined.

Finally, preliminary results will be discussed in a short plenary session, concluding the day.
